Frans Lanting,
born on July 13, 1951, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, is a renowned Dutch photographer celebrated for his exceptional wildlife and nature photography. He earned a master's degree in economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam and later moved to the United States to study environmental planning at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Settling in Santa Cruz, California, Lanting operates a studio and gallery, often collaborating with his wife, Christine Eckstrom, a writer, editor, and producer.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Lanting has documented diverse ecosystems from the Amazon to Antarctica, aiming to promote understanding of Earth's natural history through images that convey a passion for nature and a sense of wonder about our living planet. His work has been prominently featured in National Geographic, where he has served as a photographer-in-residence, as well as in other esteemed publications like Outdoor Photographer, Audubon, and Life.
Lanting's notable projects include "Life: A Journey Through Time," a multimedia exhibition that combines his photography with music by composer Philip Glass, illustrating the story of life on Earth. This exhibition has traveled extensively, starting at the Dutch natural history museum in Leiden and reaching audiences worldwide.
Throughout his career, Lanting has received numerous accolades, including the Wildlife Photographer of the Year award, the Sierra Club's Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, and an Honorary Fellowship from The Royal Photographic Society.
